As they walk, Rip began to hear long rolling sounds, like far-off thunder. The noised seemed to come from a deep pass between some high rocks. He stopped to listen for a moment. But then he decided that it was a distant mountain storm, so he went on. At last, they came to a hollow by trees. The place was like a small, outdoor theatre. The thick tree branches almost shut out the sky and the bright evening clouds. During this whole time Rip and the stranger had not said a word to each other.
(extract from Washington Irving)
